man flu

Posted by Rico on Mar-26-2009

As per Urban Dictionary:

The condition shared by all males wherein a common illness (usually a mild cold) is presented by the patient as life-threatening.

A rare strain of flu so powerful and so deadly it can only be matched by the Bubonic Plague and Aids. A incurable virus which has adapted to only effect the “XY” gene found in men. The virus attacks the immune system 10,000 times harder than the average flu virus, causing excruciating pain for the victim. Man Flu has no cure and prayers can save the forsaken life of the infected. The often deadly virus is mostly laughed at by women who sadly cannot contract “Man Flu.”

The one week out of the year when a man has a cold, and doesn’t feel good, and excercises his right to complain and whine.

I don’t have the energy to defend myself. It’s not Man Flu! Seriously, I’m dying here. Really. :)

It started with a fever late Thursday night last week.  I skipped work Friday to rest. The fever was almost gone by Saturday, except I was starting to have an itchy throat. We were able to go to church on Sunday, but the sore throat was becoming a pain. By Monday, I was coughing like crazy, particularly at night. I finally had enough and decided to take the day off yesterday (Wednesday). Now I’m back at the office (I’ve used up my work leaves, so no work, no pay), currently nursing a malunggay tea (from Carica), which was supposed to help with the cough. We’ll see. I’m trying to take lots of fluids, especially  lemon water. Did you guys notice how expensive calamansi is these days? It’s wicked. I’m also wolfing down lots of fruits and googling what’s more the apple cider vinegar can do.

I’ve got about 140 reads on my Reader, but that has to wait. So to my one or two readers (okay, three readers, but that’s pushing it), will get back to posting (and commenting)  when I finish my bout with this flu.

  7. yummybite Said,

that’s too bad…i hate having a cough more than having the flu.

3 weeks ago, my indian officemate was having a cough and he asked me what sort of remedies do we usually have in the philippines for it. i said since there is no calamansi here, he should try drinking hot lemon juice. all our indian officemates who heard me shot me a look of shock. then they started giving me a lecture about lemon being a “cold food” and that “cold foods” should not be taken when you have colds/flu/sore throat/fever/etc. weird noh? [i almost rolled my eyes that time]

    anyways, get well soon!

  8. hpf Said,

the exact same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago. i thought it would go soon but it lasted a week! this is typical on hot summer days. as my doctor bro always say, get plenty of rest and drink lots of water. plain hot water alternated with hot green tea works for me – loosens mucus, soothes the throat.

oo nga, piso na nga ang isang piraso ng calamansi. kaya nakakatuwa when we get them for free from our relatives’ backyard!

hope you feel much better now!

for flu, i always make ginger tea, it’s very soothing for the throat too. crush peeled ginger, put it in your favorite cup, pour boiling water over and let it brew for 5 minutes or so. add a teaspoon of honey and a squeeze of lemon. sip with a warm blanket around you, while you watch some sappy movie with the wifey. ^-^

you can drink as much as you want, no overdose guaranteed.
